It’s a proprietary Adobe Illustrator format, so it can be tricky to open AI files if you don’t have Illustrator. How you do it depends on what you want to do with it. Put simply, it’s easy to open an AI file just to view, but it’s less straightforward if you want to edit it. In this article, we’ll take a look at both scenarios.
This means you can view them in most apps that support PDF viewing. If you want to add the file to a larger collection of artwork and have a way to browse through it easily, try Adobe Bridge. This is one of the best free Adobe apps , and lets you open and view Illustrator files.
Should you need to incorporate an AI image into a larger piece of artwork without editing it directly, you can do so using Photoshop or its free equivalent, GIMP. When you open the image in these apps, it is imported as a PDF. You’ll see an Import dialog box, and you can normally accept the default suggestions. The main thing to remember is to import the image at a large size. You’ll lose the benefits of vector graphics when importing, so it’s better to import a large image and shrink it down than it is to import a small image and enlarge it.
When you’re done, you can copy and paste the image onto its own layer in another piece of artwork or add additional layers to this file. You’ll have to save it in a different format afterward. If none of the above options work, try changing the file extension to EPS another vector image format to see if that helps. If not, you’ll need to convert the image to a different format. We’ll look at that next. When you download an Illustrator template or get sent an AI file that you need to edit, things get trickier.
A special thanks to Open Source Bug on Youtube for making this helpful video. Most newer AI formats open just fine with Inkscape. These formats include versions 9 , 10 , and CS through CS6. In most cases, you can simply open up a new document and click and drag the AI file directly onto the canvas and it will import the same way a traditional PDF file would. This is the unfortunate nature of working cross-platform, and it extends far beyond Inkscape and Illustrator.
This is actually quite simple. The only downside to doing this is that you need to be careful about properties getting lost in translation once the file is opened with Illustrator. These are all elements that will not be recognized by Illustrator once opened. Want to learn more about how Adobe Illustrator works? I have been using Inkscape to create logos for clients for about 2 years now. Recently a potential client asked that the source file be provided upon delivery. But my question is this: The potential client asked for the source file in. Yes, SVG files created with Inkscape are completely editable in Illustrator save for some filter effects, blurring, layer masking, etc. I do so all the time. Thank you for you great tutorials! About this lesson, one thing is still not clear to me. When you convert to PDF all the layers are merged correct?
So when you open the file in Illustrator it will be all merged? I suppose it is not possible correct? Hi Nick, Sorry for asking a question that you might have received a lot. I want to convert svg to ai and I followed the steps doing with renaming it. But even if I change the name including. Is there any other way that I can try with? Btw thanks for your wonderful videos! This makes 0 sense. I have to close the program and go back into the file, mess around with numbers etc.
Also when turning something to curves, like letters, it seems there are two parts now. I used to be able to break an anchor, to a letter, lets say, and as I deleted the anchors, the two parts of the letter, would be truly disconnected. Now the letter stays connected, regardless of breaking it; how I have no idea. Workflow is seriously impeded. What is going on?
