This is not optional. Every three years I swear to myself that next time I will migrate to a new accounting software because Intuit corp has the WORST customer service on the planet, has buggy online software, and forces you to create an online account to use their desktop program. I’ve just spent the last hour trying to access my desktop PC accounts because Intuit “software registration” program is so buggy that it won’t work. I can’t say I dislike a company more than Intuit.

My accountants still prefer QB, so that’s what I use for my business. They and I also prefer the Desktop version of the product: the whole “software as an annuity” business model leaves me cold. As for the version of Desktop Pro: 17 years in, it was the fastest and easiest install of QB ever — and that was done using the disc. I tried the URL noted on the box, but it took me to a marketing page, and I wasn’t going to hunt for the download link.

After completing the install, importing the company file, and finishing a few minor bits of housekeeping, everything was running just fine under Windows Next, I ran the update routine manually: it downloaded 1.

After installing, restarting, etc. This, too, was successful and seems to be well in my QB world. In all, I’m pleasantly surprised by the update-and-migrate experience. Upgraded to QB ’21 from my old ’13 version. Tech and uprades were dropped and it would kick off every so often, so it was a matter of time. And if you enter something incorrectly, it is so interconnected that it’s difficult to delete B because it is transactionally linked somehow to A and C This makes learning by experimentation extra difficult.
